Diagnostic Code 7328 · 38 CFR §4.114
Small intestine resection means having a section of the small bowel surgically removed. Veterans may need this surgery due to combat injuries, Crohn's disease that developed during service, intestinal obstructions, or complications from other abdominal conditions. The small intestine is where most nutrient absorption happens, so removing a portion can cause chronic problems with digestion and nutrition. The more intestine removed, the more severe the nutritional impact, a condition sometimes called short bowel syndrome.
