Diagnostic Code 7330 · 38 CFR §4.114
An intestinal fistula is an abnormal tunnel-like connection between the intestine and another organ (such as the bladder, vagina, or skin surface) or between two different sections of intestine. This allows intestinal contents to leak where they should not go, causing infections, skin breakdown, and significant discomfort. Veterans may develop fistulas from combat injuries, surgical complications, inflammatory bowel disease, or radiation treatment. Fistulas can be extremely difficult to treat and often require multiple surgeries to repair.
