Diagnostic Code 7205 · 38 CFR §4.114
An esophageal diverticulum is a pouch or sac that forms in the wall of the esophagus. Food and liquid can become trapped in this pouch, causing difficulty swallowing, regurgitation of undigested food, bad breath, coughing, and aspiration risk. The most common type is Zenker diverticulum, which forms at the back of the throat. Veterans may develop this condition from prior esophageal surgery complications, chronic reflux damage, or age-related weakness in the esophageal wall.
