Diagnostic Code 6311 · 38 CFR §4.88b
Miliary tuberculosis is the most severe disseminated form of TB, where bacteria spread throughout the body via the bloodstream affecting multiple organs simultaneously. The VA rates active miliary TB at 100 percent. After the disease becomes inactive, the graduated rating schedule in sections 4.88c and 4.89 applies. Recurrence must be confirmed by culture, histopathology, or other diagnostic testing. Residual damage to lungs, skin, respiratory system, central nervous system, musculoskeletal system, eyes, GI system, and genitourinary system is rated separately.
| Rating | Criteria |
|---|---|
| 100% | Active miliary tuberculosis confirmed by imaging and lab work during treatment. Recurrence must be confirmed by culture, histopathology, or other diagnostic testing. |
| 0% | Inactive TB after the graduated rating schedule concludes. Residual organ damage is rated separately under each affected body system and the residuals listed in section 4.88c. |
Chest imaging showing miliary pattern. Lab confirmation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Records of organs affected. Treatment records. Post-treatment assessments of each organ system.
Regular pulmonary TB is confined to the lungs. Miliary TB has spread via the bloodstream to multiple organs throughout the body.
Yes. Each organ system with lasting damage should be evaluated and rated separately, often resulting in significantly higher combined ratings.
