VA Disability Rating for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (DC 6350)

Diagnostic Code 6350 · 38 CFR §4.88b

What Is It?

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the body's own tissues. It can affect virtually any organ system. The disease follows an unpredictable pattern of flares and remissions. The VA rates SLE based on exacerbation frequency and severity. The rating cannot be combined with DC 7809 (discoid lupus). The VA also allows an alternative: combining evaluations for residuals under each affected body system, using whichever method produces the higher evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the VA evaluate lupus affecting multiple organs?

The VA can rate lupus itself under DC 6350 and separately rate each damaged organ, using whichever method gives you the higher evaluation.

Can lupus be service-connected?

Yes, through direct onset during service, aggravation of pre-existing condition, or secondary to environmental exposures or medications during service.

What if lupus goes into remission between flares?

The VA rates based on the overall pattern, not a single exam. Document every flare with medical records.
