Diagnostic Code 6523 · 38 CFR §4.97
Bacterial rhinitis is chronic inflammation of the nasal passages caused by persistent bacterial infection. Unlike allergic rhinitis which is triggered by allergens, bacterial rhinitis involves ongoing bacterial colonization that causes thick nasal discharge, crusting, foul odor, and nasal congestion. Chronic bacterial rhinitis can lead to a condition called ozena (atrophic rhinitis) where the nasal passages widen and become crusted. Veterans may develop this from nasal injuries, environmental exposures, or complications of other nasal conditions during service.
