What Is It?

The spinal accessory nerve controls two important muscles: the trapezius muscle in your upper back and shoulder area, and the sternocleidomastoid muscle in your neck. When this nerve is damaged, you may have trouble shrugging your shoulders, turning your head, or lifting your arms above shoulder level. Veterans commonly develop this condition from neck injuries, surgical procedures in the neck area, or trauma sustained during military service.
