VA Disability Rating for Progressive Muscular Atrophy (DC 8023)

Diagnostic Code 8023 · 38 CFR §4.124a

What Is It?

Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) is a rare motor neuron disease closely related to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) where the lower motor neurons progressively degenerate, causing muscle weakness, wasting (atrophy), and fasciculations (muscle twitching). Unlike ALS, PMA initially affects only the lower motor neurons, though many cases eventually develop upper motor neuron signs as well. Veterans may develop PMA from toxic exposures during service, and ALS/motor neuron diseases are presumptive conditions for veterans with 90 or more days of active duty. This is a progressive, life-altering disease that typically results in severe disability.

Evidence Needed

Neurologist's diagnosis confirmed with EMG showing lower motor neuron degeneration, Nerve conduction studies, MRI to rule out structural causes, Serial examinations documenting progressive weakness and atrophy, Documentation of 90+ days of active duty for ALS presumptive connection, Pulmonary function tests if breathing is affected
