Diagnostic Code 8004 · 38 CFR §4.124a
Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement, causing tremors, stiffness, slowness of movement, and balance problems. It occurs when nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine gradually die. For veterans, Parkinson's is particularly significant because it is a presumptive condition for those exposed to Agent Orange and other herbicides during service in Vietnam, Thailand, and other locations. The PACT Act has further expanded toxic exposure presumptions. Parkinson's typically develops years or decades after the toxic exposure, so many veterans are being diagnosed now for exposures that happened during the Vietnam era or more recent deployments.
