Diagnostic Code 8010 · 38 CFR §4.124a
Myelitis is inflammation of the spinal cord that can damage the nerve fibers, disrupting communication between the brain and the rest of the body. Transverse myelitis — the most common form — affects a full cross-section of the spinal cord at a particular level, causing weakness or paralysis below that point, numbness and tingling, pain, and bladder and bowel dysfunction. Veterans may develop myelitis from viral infections contracted during service, as a complication of vaccinations, from autoimmune conditions triggered by service-related stress, or from toxic exposures.
