VA Disability Rating for Multiple Sclerosis (DC 8018)

Diagnostic Code 8018 · 38 CFR §4.124a

What Is It?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the protective covering (myelin) of nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. This disrupts nerve signal transmission, causing a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, numbness, weakness, vision problems, difficulty walking, bladder dysfunction, and cognitive changes. MS is particularly important for veterans because the VA provides a seven-year presumptive period — if MS manifests within seven years of discharge from active duty, it is presumed to be service-connected. The minimum rating for MS is 30%.
