Diagnostic Code 8012 · 38 CFR §4.124a
Hematomyelia is bleeding within the spinal cord itself, which damages the nerve fibers running through the cord and causes neurological deficits below the level of the hemorrhage. This can result from spinal trauma during combat or training, vascular malformations, blood clotting disorders, or as a complication of spinal surgery. The bleeding destroys spinal cord tissue, potentially causing paralysis, loss of sensation, pain, and bladder and bowel dysfunction. The level and extent of the hemorrhage determines which body areas are affected.

Spinal MRI showing the hemorrhage location and extent of cord damage, Neurological examination documenting motor and sensory deficits at specific spinal levels, Service treatment records documenting the injury or event that caused the hemorrhage, Urodynamic testing if bladder dysfunction is present, EMG/nerve conduction studies to characterize the extent of nerve damage, Rehabilitation records documenting functional recovery and remaining limitations
