VA Disability Rating for Benign Brain Tumors (DC 8003)

Diagnostic Code 8003 · 38 CFR §4.124a

What Is It?

This code covers non-cancerous brain tumors including meningiomas, acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas), pituitary adenomas, and other benign growths. Although these tumors are not cancerous, they can cause serious problems by pressing on surrounding brain structures. Depending on their location, they may cause headaches, vision changes, hearing loss, hormonal disruptions, seizures, or weakness. Veterans may develop benign brain tumors from radiation exposure, toxic chemical exposure, or head trauma during service. Even benign tumors often require monitoring, medication, or surgery.
