Diagnostic Code 8020 · 38 CFR §4.124a
A brain abscess is a collection of pus within the brain tissue caused by a bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infection. This is a serious condition that creates a space-occupying mass that presses on surrounding brain structures and causes inflammation. Veterans may develop brain abscesses from penetrating head wounds in combat, spread of infections from the sinuses or ears, blood-borne infections from contaminated wounds, or complications of dental infections. Treatment typically requires surgical drainage and prolonged antibiotic therapy. Even after successful treatment, the abscess can leave lasting neurological damage from the destroyed brain tissue.
