VA Disability Rating for Wrist Replacement (Prosthetic)

Diagnostic Code 5053 · 38 CFR §4.71a

What Is It?

Wrist replacement surgery involves replacing the damaged wrist joint surfaces with artificial components. This relatively uncommon procedure is performed when severe wrist arthritis or fracture damage causes debilitating pain and loss of grip strength that cannot be managed with other treatments. After wrist replacement, there are typically permanent restrictions on heavy gripping, lifting, and impact activities. Veterans may need this surgery due to fractures sustained during service, progressive arthritis from old wrist injuries, or rheumatoid arthritis affecting the wrist.
