Diagnostic Code 5214 · 38 CFR §4.71a
Wrist ankylosis means the wrist joint is completely frozen or surgically fused with no movement possible. This can result from surgical fusion performed to treat severe arthritis or instability, from trauma that destroyed the joint, or from severe inflammatory conditions. The position of fusion significantly affects function. Favorable ankylosis places the wrist in 20 to 30 degrees of extension, which allows the best grip function. Unfavorable ankylosis in any other position, particularly flexion, significantly impairs hand use. Veterans may develop wrist ankylosis from fractures, failed wrist surgeries, or progressive arthritis from service-connected injuries.
