Thigh Extension Limitation VA Disability Rating

Diagnostic Code 5251 · 38 CFR §4.71a

What Is It?

Limitation of extension of the thigh means you cannot fully straighten your hip joint. Normal hip extension allows your leg to move backward about 20 to 30 degrees past the neutral standing position. When extension is limited to 5 degrees or less, it affects your ability to walk with a normal stride, stand upright comfortably, and perform activities that require reaching your leg behind you. This commonly results from hip injuries, arthritis, or surgical complications related to military service.
