Diagnostic Code 5283 · 38 CFR §4.71a
The tarsal and metatarsal bones make up the architecture of the midfoot and forefoot. When these bones fracture and heal in an incorrect position, it changes the shape and mechanics of the foot. Malunion or nonunion of these bones alters weight distribution, creates painful pressure points, and makes walking on any surface uncomfortable. These injuries commonly result from crushing injuries, blast events, vehicle accidents, or heavy objects falling on the foot during military service.
