VA Disability Rating for Synovitis

Diagnostic Code 5020 · 38 CFR §4.71a

What Is It?

Synovitis is inflammation of the synovial membrane, which is the tissue lining the inside of your joint capsule. When this membrane becomes inflamed, it produces excess fluid and causes the joint to swell, become warm, and feel stiff. Unlike bursitis which affects the pads around the joint, synovitis affects the interior lining of the joint itself. It can occur in any joint but most commonly involves the knees, wrists, and ankles. Veterans may develop synovitis from repetitive joint stress during training and operations, joint injuries, or as an early sign of inflammatory arthritis that developed during service.
