Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure where two or more vertebrae are permanently joined together to eliminate motion between them. Veterans often undergo fusion surgery to treat severe disc disease, fractures, or instability caused by service-related injuries. While the surgery can reduce pain, it permanently limits spinal mobility and often leads to additional problems at adjacent segments.
