VA Disability Rating for Ring or Little Finger Limitation of Motion

Diagnostic Code 5230 · 38 CFR §4.71a

What Is It?

DC 5230 rates limitation of motion of the ring finger or little finger. These fingers contribute to power grip and hand function but are considered less functionally important than the thumb, index, or long finger by VA rating standards. As a result, any degree of limitation of motion in these fingers only qualifies for a noncompensable 0 percent rating. However, establishing service connection at 0 percent is still valuable because it creates a pathway for secondary claims and future increases if the condition leads to additional complications. Veterans commonly injure these fingers through crush injuries, fractures, or jams during training and service activities.
