VA Disability Rating for Periostitis

Diagnostic Code 5022 · 38 CFR §4.71a

What Is It?

Periostitis is inflammation of the periosteum, which is the tough membrane covering the outer surface of bones. The most common form that veterans experience is tibial periostitis, commonly known as shin splints. When the periosteum becomes inflamed from repeated stress, it causes localized bone pain, tenderness, and swelling. While shin splints are the most familiar example, periostitis can affect any bone where there is repetitive stress or direct trauma. Veterans frequently develop this condition from running, marching, prolonged standing, and carrying heavy loads during military training and operations.
