Diagnostic Code 5311 · 38 CFR §4.73
Muscle Group XI consists of the posterior and lateral muscles of the lower leg, primarily the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles that form the calf, along with the peroneal muscles on the outer side of the leg. These muscles control ankle plantar flexion (pointing the foot down), push-off during walking, and stabilization of the foot and ankle. The calf muscles are among the most important for walking, running, and climbing stairs. Military injuries from shrapnel, gunshot wounds, and blast events frequently damage these muscles.
