VA Disability Rating for Intermittent Hydrarthrosis

Diagnostic Code 5018 · 38 CFR §4.71a

What Is It?

Intermittent hydrarthrosis is a condition characterized by recurring episodes of fluid accumulation in a joint, usually the knee. The joint swells with fluid periodically, sometimes on a fairly regular schedule such as every few weeks. During episodes, the joint becomes swollen, stiff, and uncomfortable. Between episodes, the joint may return to normal. The cause is often unclear, but it may be related to allergic reactions, hormonal changes, or chronic joint irritation. Veterans may develop this condition from repetitive joint stress during service, prior joint injuries, or inflammatory conditions that began during military duty.
