Hallux Rigidus VA Disability Rating

Diagnostic Code 5281 · 38 CFR §4.71a

What Is It?

Hallux rigidus is a stiff big toe caused by arthritis in the joint at the base of the toe. The joint becomes increasingly difficult to bend, and bone spurs may form around it. Every step you take pushes off from this joint, so when it cannot move properly, walking becomes painful and your gait changes. The condition commonly develops from repetitive stress injuries sustained during military service, including running, rucking, and jumping.
