VA Disability Rating for Gonorrheal Arthritis

Diagnostic Code 5004 · 38 CFR §4.71a

What Is It?

Gonorrheal arthritis is joint inflammation caused by disseminated gonococcal infection. When a gonorrhea infection spreads through the bloodstream, it can settle in one or more joints, causing acute septic arthritis with significant pain, swelling, and potential permanent joint damage. The condition most commonly affects the knees, wrists, and ankles. Even after the infection is treated, lasting joint damage can remain. Veterans may have contracted the underlying infection during service, and if the resulting arthritis developed during or within a reasonable time after service, it can be service-connected.
