Genu Recurvatum VA Disability Rating

Diagnostic Code 5263 · 38 CFR §4.71a

What Is It?

Genu recurvatum is a condition where the knee hyperextends or bends backward beyond the normal straight position when standing or walking. It can result from ligament damage, nerve injuries, muscle weakness, or bone abnormalities in the lower leg. Veterans may develop this condition from combat injuries, training accidents, or as a complication of other knee conditions. The backward bending creates instability and increases the risk of falls and further joint damage.
