VA Disability Rating for Elbow Replacement (Prosthetic)

Diagnostic Code 5052 · 38 CFR §4.71a

What Is It?

Elbow replacement surgery, also called elbow arthroplasty, involves replacing the damaged parts of the elbow joint with artificial components. This is less common than hip or knee replacement but is performed when severe arthritis, fractures, or other conditions destroy the elbow joint. The elbow is a complex joint, and even after a successful replacement, there are often lasting restrictions on heavy lifting and impact activities. Veterans may need elbow replacement due to combat injuries, training fractures, or degenerative changes from service-connected conditions.
