What Is It?

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that primarily targets the spine. Over time the vertebrae can fuse together, reducing flexibility and creating a hunched-forward posture. It often begins in the sacroiliac joints and moves upward. Many veterans develop symptoms during or shortly after service due to physical demands and repetitive spinal stress.
