VA Disability Rating for Ankle Replacement (Prosthetic)

Diagnostic Code 5056 · 38 CFR §4.71a

What Is It?

Ankle replacement surgery involves replacing the worn surfaces of the ankle joint with artificial components. This procedure is performed when severe ankle arthritis or post-traumatic damage causes debilitating pain and loss of walking ability. Ankle replacement is less common than hip or knee replacement and has a higher complication rate, but for the right candidate it can restore significant function. Veterans may need ankle replacement due to fractures sustained during training or operations, chronic ankle instability that led to arthritis, or long-term wear from years of running and marching.
