Leukemia — VA Disability Rating Criteria (DC 7703)

Diagnostic Code 7703 · 38 CFR §4.117

What Is It?

Leukemia is a cancer of the blood-forming tissues, primarily the bone marrow, leading to overproduction of abnormal white blood cells. Types include acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and others not covered by more specific diagnostic codes. For veterans, leukemia may be linked to Agent Orange exposure (certain leukemias are presumptive conditions), radiation exposure, benzene and other chemical exposures, or burn pit exposure under the PACT Act. The VA assigns a mandatory 100 percent rating during active disease, with reassessment after treatment based on residual effects.

Rating Criteria

RatingCriteria
100%Active leukemia or during treatment. The 100% rating applies during active disease and continues for six months following completion of treatment. After six months, the VA reassesses based on residual disability. The minimum rating following treatment is based on the applicable residual condition ratings.

Evidence Needed

Pathology and bone marrow biopsy results confirming the leukemia diagnosis are critical. Treatment records including chemotherapy, radiation, stem cell transplant, and follow-up care documentation are needed. For Agent Orange presumptive claims, deployment records showing service in Vietnam, Thailand, or other qualifying locations are sufficient for nexus. For other exposures, documentation of the exposure and an oncology nexus opinion are needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is leukemia a presumptive condition for Agent Orange?

Certain types of leukemia, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), are on the Agent Orange presumptive list. Other types may qualify under other presumptive categories or through direct service connection with a nexus opinion.

What about the PACT Act?

The PACT Act expanded presumptive conditions for veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxic substances. Some cancers including certain leukemias may qualify. Check the current VA presumptive list or consult a VSO for the most up-to-date coverage.
